  1. The AKAI MFC is not very robust. One of the artists in the label has had 2 of them and they both malfuctioned within 4-6 weeks of purchase.

The Sherman is a good outboard filter uni (famous for its distortion too...goes wild really) and it is built like a tank.

You could always get 2 Moogerfooger filters 8) But make sure they have a CV input/output for filter tracking.

Don't mean to be a spoil sport, but you cannot expand the dynamic range of a signal using a compressor. You can do so by using an expander/gate.

Buss compression has a lot to offer than just helping making things sound louder. You can throw all the drums though a buss compressor and help them "glue" together....all the percussion, all the backing vocals, the lead lines...etc.

Since I started using buss compression with gentle slopes, my mixes sounded much better than before, not simply louder.

  4. Most of my synths don't even have presets/memory...except from the odd picture that I take of a few modules on my modular synths.

Every time I fire them up I make new sounds. These limitations have pushed me to come up with sounds that have inspird me to make whole tunes based on them.

The absolutely perfect interface of a modular synth makes this job dead easy and fast.

  5. Αυτά τα "κονσολοπολυκάναλα" όπως τα λες φαίνονται όντως πολύ συμπαθητικά. Έχω ακούσει όμως ότι χρησιμοποιούν κάποια δικά τους formats τα οποία δεν υποστηρίζονται από τα softwares όπως το CuBase πχ. Αυτό Ισχύει;

Look into a cheap digital desk like the Yamaha 01V. You'll get a mixer and controller as well, since Cubase has sort of "controller presets" that have been made to allow some of the digital desks on the market, to be used as controllers too.

Call me an idealist, but I simply refuse to give anymore cash to Bill Gates.

I build my own systems and don't get XP Pro as you would with a "ready" system.

I can do everything I want with 98SE and have been producing music on that OS just fine.

I have helped others set up their systems and have seen the effects of turning the loads of things that are running in the background, off...I have also seen the effects of going for the full-on Microsoft support ( ) (service packs, anti-virus...etc).

I am making my self clear by saying that I personally am a PC user and a very happy one as well. By no means am I saying the Mac is any better...

But (going back to the topic in hand) if I was starting on using a computer for audio production today, I would choose a Mac over a PC, only if I wanted to use Logic, Pro-Tools or Digital Performer.

  7. I'll just quote my self to make things clear...

This is a music forum, I just put down info from a link that helped run my computer a bit faster when I was on Win XP as that OS has so much extra redundant (for audio) stuff running in the background all the time, that makes the computer slow.

I am not a "computer pro" like user "Wow!" claims to be, but seriously now... a few tweaks and changing the registry (back it up before you do off course), don't mean that I have to be one in order to make my system work better for audio purposes.

Don't mean to insult anyone, but "aparadekto" is to have a system not working to its full potential when it is only a matter of a few tweaks to allow it to do so.

  9. I've used the Houston controller in college and I tell you, learning the key commands of your QWERTY will yield faster results using your sequencer. Besides having instant access to basic transport functions, you get instant access to a lot of functions regarding the arrangement window, the regions/events and with a lot of audio parameters.

Get a mouse with a roll bar on top so you can zoom in and out at your desired point ultra fast.

Also once you get your sequencer set up a default arrangement with your desired screen sets stored on the QWERTY's numeric keypad. It'll only take a few minutes and you'll only do it once and save it as the autoload song (your customised default set-up/enviroment).

These little but basic things will take a day to learn but will mean that your workflow will be flying later.

    Tsiou.

  10. Simple answer.

If you want to use Logic/PT/DP, get a Mac (Although I run Logic 5.5 on a PC and can do anything I want with it).

If you want to use Cubase/other sequencer, get a PC.

If you are willing to spend some time on the net and find out which motherboards/OSs work with which soundcards without problems, a PC will in general take a little more time to set up correctly, but you'll get a faster system for a given price then going down the Mac route.

From my personal experience with both platforms and Mac/PC users/friends of mine...

Whatever people say, Macs DO CRASH!.

Whatever people say, if you use a PC for audio purposes only (i.e. no interenet, no games, no installing and unistalling useless software all the time), you'll have no problems what so ever... besides maxing out the CPU (just like you would with a Mac) if you use loads of plug ins.

If you have cash to waste on computers, go for a Mac. I know I would, just because they look cooler and the G5's interior reminds you you are using a serious system everytime you take a look inside...

Either way you'll be able to make tunes regardless of what you choose and don't forget that Jobs is as much of a c*nt as Gates is.

So simply get one and start producing!

    Tsiou.

    thanx[/quote']

You can easily use the computer as a hard disk recorder and nothing else. Once you get an audio interface that has the number of I/Os that you need, you simply record enable enough audio tracks in the sequencer and if the desk has enough busses that can cater for the job, you route the sources to the corresponding busses. Otherwise you use the desk's direct outs.

Once you record each track individually, you can easily "throw back" on the desk's "tape returns" the corresponding audio tracks, flip the channels to "tape/return", mix everything and then record group mixes or a final stereo mix back into the computer.

Just think of the computer as a multitrack, just like you would with tape...instead of reels, tape and magnetic flux, you have a screen/case/keyboard, a siver hard disk and 1's and 0's.

    Tsiou.

  12. You could do worse than getting a Soundcraft Studio 8 series desk.

It's available in 16/24/32 channels and meets your requirements, besides the firewire one.

They're a bit big in size for their channels, but they are very robust and cheap (2nd hand) nowdays and definitely "sound more expensive" than their current price tag on the net.

    Tsiou.

  13. Το Battery είναι το στάνταρ στο Drum Sampling...

I beg to differ since battery is not capable of sampling at all!

Anyway, good news for Battery users. I am sticking to my AKAI S1100, my real analog filters/ADSRs/LFOs that oscilllate up to 5Khz/Ring mods, Recycle and EXS 24 as I can do everything using them things.

I tried the first Tera for about a week and uninstalled it straight away. I am making it clear that I am mainly interested in subtractive synthesis and Tera was dissapointing. Maybe the peole that are into waveshpaing and physical modelling might like it, I sure didn't.

  15. Πάντως κάποιος που χρησιμοποιεί Computer DAW μάλλον δεν χρειάζεται καν κονσολα. I mean τι να την κανεις αν έχεις λαμπατους προενισχυτες και ενα καλο controller?

I work with a computer and I am using an analogue desk so I can route audio from the computer out to hardware effects and compressors and filters, and record it back in.

If I did not have the desk I would have to waste a lot of time repatching things all the time...and as they say, time is money!

    Tsiou.

  16. Interesting...this is the most important thing as far as I'm concerned. It's ridiculous how machines that have clocks in the GHz range cannot sequence Midi as tight as an Atari.

Studio Connections "Total Recall" support (optional integration of Yamaha's Studio Manager 2). The first step into a new dimension of software/hardware integration. This modular editing system builds a powerful bridge between the virtual and physical studio. Opening a project can recall an entire studio setup within seconds.
External FX Plugins allow for direct integration of external hardware effects processors into the VST audio mixer. Use your favorite outboard gear just like plugins -- including automatic delay compensation.
Extended Freeze function for virtual instruments and audio tracks with added flexibility and improved performance. Freeze virtual instruments with or without insert effects. Then automatically unload the instrument to free up RAM. Freeze audio tracks with insert effects to free up even more CPU performance.

Μου έρχεται να κλάψω από συγκίνηση' date=' έκαναν καλή δουλειά τελικά... [/quote']

Ah, so its just a manager for the external hardware gear...they haven't done anything to make the Midi sequencing any better...bollox to that then. :(

I'm staying with Logic until its worth changing over to Cubase...I'm afraid that the day I change over to a Mac is closer than the day I change over to Cubase...

    Tsiou.

  17. I have used an 02R in college and had a quick run with the D8b.

If I had the money for these desks I'd much rather spend that cash to get an Allen & Heath desk.

So waht if the desk has a digital compressor on each channel, that at the end of the day sounds nothing like the real deal.

Try mixing uncompressed and compressed version of the signal that are going through outboard. I hate having to cope with latencies.

You can say that everyone records onto HDD anyway, so what is the difference?

The desk's signal path, the EQ curves, the pres, the VCAs, the sound the desk outputs when you are running loads of hot channels...everything.

I'd choose analog over digital anyday.

And by the way go over to the Mackie forums and see how many people sold the analog 8 buss to get the D8b and sold the D8b back in a matter of days to get back their original analog 8 buss Mackies ;)

    Tsiou.

  18. Επίσης η steinberg υπόσχεται καλύτερη και πιο άμεση επικοινωνία με hardware (χμ...)

Interesting...this is the most important thing as far as I'm concerned. It's ridiculous how machines that have clocks in the GHz range cannot sequence Midi as tight as an Atari.

You have the Mac people and the PC people fighting over which is the best platform when a ancient Atari pisses and shits over the G5 and latest PC in terms of sequencing external Midi gear  .

As for Steinberg, if history teaches us anything, we'll have to wait a good year (or two) before a bug-free version gets released.
